PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Description

Digital Electronics is the study of electronic circuits that are used to process and control digital signals. In contrast to analog electronics, where information is represented by a continuously varying voltage, digital signals are represented by two discreet voltages or logic levels. This distinction allows for greater signal speed and storage capabilities and has revolutionized the world electronics. Digital electronics is the foundation of all modern electronic devices such as cellular phones, MP3 players, laptop computers, digital cameras, high definition televisions, etc.
This course covers the operation, application, and troubleshooting of TTL and CMOS electronic logic devices, their use in combinational and sequential logic circuits, the interface between the logic families, and the interface between digital and analog circuits. The course also provides a study of Boolean algebra, binary and hexadecimal number systems, binary codes, and the analysis of the basic components and circuits used in semiconductor switching.
What will You Learn?
After completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Identify analog and digital electrical signals.
2. Convert numbers between decimal, binary, octal, and hexadecimal number systems.
3. Explain the operation of digital logic gates.
4. Use Boolean algebra to express logic operations as equations.
5. Use Karnaugh maps to minimize (simplify) Boolean equations.
6. Identify combinational logic circuits and sequential logic circuits, and explain their operation.
7. Identify, explain, and implement various types of flip-flops, counter circuits, shift registers, and other logic circuits.
8. Identify com m only used integrated circuit families used in digital equipment.
9. Troubleshoot digital circuits using standard test equipment and specialized instruments.

Pre-requisites
1. It is necessary to understand analog systems and circuit analysis
2. Knowledge of basic algebra
3. Desire to learn and understand digital circuitry
